Artist Statement

I visualize my work as acts of resistance to fast-paced, anxiety-inducing, societal norms. Our collective reality in the 21st century has become riddled with increased anxiety and mental disorders as a result of social media, climate crisis, the political climate, trauma, and major global events. The aim of my work is to soothe the viewer through distraction - using sensory-somatic research to pull the viewer to reconcile trauma through body movement and engagement. The work activates personal and communal meditation, by slowing people down and causing them to be present with each other.

I manipulate raw materials, allowing for its affordances, potentials, and limits to guide my engagement with form. I am captivated by creating objects that appear to be in constant movement through rigid and organic forms of nature; I create a meditative experience by emulating the intricate patterns all around us. Wood is a muse and collaborator in my work, as its natural tension, stress points, and features dictate my organic, artistic direction. Wood holds living memory of a time and a place; through subtle interactions, the viewer might pull from and be educated by this once living being.
